Case Closed Manga Creator Gosho Aoyama Opens up in New TV Special. For 30 years, manga creator Gosho Aoyama has been hard at work on Case Closed (known in Japan as Detective Conan). But what’s it like to work on such a formidable project? How is his workspace set up? These questions and more will be answered in a new 72-minute special—part of the NHK series Professional Work Style.

The series, which airs on NHK, follows professionals in many different lines of work. Beekeepers, surgeons, and poets have all been featured in the past. Previous episodes have highlighted the work of Hayao Miyazaki and, in their first interview with a “fictional” character, Attack on Titan‘s Eren Yeager.

In each case, Professional Work Style follows its subjects over a long period of time. In the case of Aoyama, the filming took place over the course of seven months—a period of time the manga artist was initially nervous about.

“I want to keep the scenes I draw in the manga a mystery,” the artist said at first. However, over time, Aoyama opens up about his process and his history. He adds, however, that it’s a bit embarrassing for people to see him in his normal state (“probably quite tired”).

The director of the special also teases that a surprise guest arrives over the course of the seven-month filming… but, in accordance with Aoyama’s wishes, you’ll have to wait ’til the special airs to see who it is.

Professional Work Style Special: Manga Artist Gosho Aoyama will air April 28, and will be available as a video on demand on NHK Plus for a week following the debut.
